Do Streaming Services Signal the End of TV?

Do Streaming Services Signal the End of TV?

Luke Resser, Messenger Reporter

Netflix began streaming media in 2007, and ever since, the world of entertainment has never been the same. Along with other services such as Amazon Prime and Hulu, streaming has become increasingly popular over the years. And in recent years, these websites have began to create original shows and films. So, the question arises: is there a need for network television in the modern age?

These original shows had a rocky start. But now, with shows like Stranger Things, Transparent, and House of Cards dominate popular culture. At the 2017 Emmys, nearly every show that one was either a streaming original, such as Veep, The Handmaiden’s Tale, and Master of None. Not only are these shows from online services dominating, but online services are also gaining popularity over TV. Think about it. Do you spend more time watching TV or watching Netflix? When did you make the switch to these online services. Personally, I do not watch TV as much as I used to. Instead, I use streaming services. But don’t worry. While many may prophesize that the end of network television is near, I don’t think there’s anything to worry about.

While online services have definitely put a dent in TV, people still turn of their TV for sports, awards shows, and more. Until these services offer their own live broadcasts, TV will still stay.
