Vick – Skipping Valentine’s

Vick - Skipping Valentine's

Olivia Vick, Messenger Reporter

Valentine’s Day is one of the most romantic days of the year, and while sometimes it is widely celebrated, many people disregard its significance. It’s not necessary to be in a relationship to enjoy this holiday.  There are people in your life you should show you love them on Valentine’s Day, and make sure you don’t miss out on all of the festivities.

Significant Other: While not everyone is in a relationship this type of year, for those of you who are, this is the most traditional way to spend Valentine’s Day. While Valentine’s Dates can range from pizza and Netflix at home to a bouquet of roses at a 5-star restaurant, this is an incredibly romantic night to spend with your partner. It’s less frequent that couples skip this holiday, but it does happen. Just because you can’t afford to go somewhere fancy or to buy a $50 box of chocolates doesn’t mean you should avoid the entire idea of the holiday. Just take advantage of this time to spend together, and tell your significant other how much you love them. That’s what really matters.

Friends: Many people overlook this aspect of Valentine’s Day- you should use this opportunity to show your friends how much you love them too. Whether this means going on a Valentine’s “date” with one friend, going out with a group of friends, going to a party, or just hanging out at someone’s house, this is much nicer than spending a romantic holiday alone, and it provides a chance for you and your friends to bond.  I recommend exchanging (affordable) gifts amongst your friend groups, and getting even a small chocolate bar from someone can make a person’s day.

Family: The majority of families don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day together anymore after their students reach high school. While I’m not recommending you go on a double date with your parents, a card or small gift can go a long way. Use this loving holiday to remind your siblings that they matter to you no matter how much you fight, and tell your parents you love them. This is a part of Valentine’s Day I feel like gets skipped over the most, but it is equally as important.

This year, don’t skip Valentine’s Day, make the most of it. Tell those important to you that you appreciate them, and have a lovely holiday.
