The newest cultural phenomenon is the new multi-platform game Fortnite: Battle Royale; a game in which a player must outlive 99 other people and be the last man standing using only the materials they find throughout their endeavors and choices in that round. This game has recently blown up due to its addictive nature, free-to-play beta, and community aspects. This game can be played in a solo queue but is more commonly enjoyed by friends in either a duo or a 4 person squad setting. Similar to other survival games, Fortnite allows players to break and build walls, stairs, and floors. The game begins when characters skydive to a chosen destination on the map that perfectly combines an open expansive world design and towering tight-quarted cities. Even though the map is too large for players to ever find every single other character in a timely manner, the creators implemented a boundary in the form of the notorious storm. This storm circles in on the map in random locations each game causing damage to those who are not in the eye of the storm. This tactic limits the space in which someone can set up and fortify their surroundings. When a player outlives opponent after opponent they get this rush of adrenaline that is uncommon in many other FPS or survival games. Video games are often quite expensive and can range from $20-60 but with this game still being in development, Epic Games has allowed their beta to be free for anyone who wants to download it. They recently introduced a mobile version of the game that is available through access codes, because the game is linked through the epic games systems, players can play across console, mobile and pc. Although there is a large dispute between those in favor of the bright and fresh graphics of Fortnite versus its realistic counterpart Player Unknown’s Battleground-more commonly known as PUBG)-this issue comes down to personal preference in the visual and tactical display of a survival game.
