Last Friday, McCracken County High School football players played Calloway for McCracken’s homecoming game. The student section was filled with boys and girls dressed in neon filled with high levels of excitement. McCracken pulled through with a win, 44-7. Jace Houston, an experienced freshman on the football team, had plenty to say about the experience.
The team prepared for this game by staying consistent and working harder, according to Houston. He says to prepare for the game individually, he just focuses on himself and what could make him a better player. While most will believe there would be lots of pressure on the players for a homecoming game, Houston says he didn’t feel much pressure from the coaches. “I just knew there were going to be a lot of people there,” he says.
Houston says that someone who has supported him a lot and has gotten him to where he is today is his grandpa; who helps him practice and is usually the one taking him to practice and picking him up. He also feels that the team has been a great support system for him, they even have a group chat for all of the players in order for everyone to communicate.
Winning this game was good for the team because they hadn’t won many games yet in the season, and losing against Tilghman lowered their morale.
“I just don’t think that as a team we have played to our potential,” Jace says.
He could predict that they would win the game, but he was still a little nervous about it. “We haven’t seen any Calloway film yet, so we don’t really know how they play,” he says
He says he knew that Calloway would really be looking at McCracken’s weaknesses. Though it wasn’t a perfect game, Houston says the team worked hard. In the end, McCracken came through with an excellent win and a happy student section.
