While there are a lot of aspects that go into marching band like practices, rehearsals, and long days. They all lead up to one big moment, the competitions.
Competitions can be long and may not feel worth it, but the adrenaline rush you get from performing in front of mass groups of people is always worth it.
Another big aspect of having a marching band is leadership.
From the directors and the instructors, to the drum majors, and section leaders. Everyone plays a very special role in the band’s success.
Deciding who the section leaders and drum majors are every year is an extremely important process. Olive Denton(12) was chosen for the role of drumline section leader. Which was a role she worked very hard to gain.
Leading a section isn’t easy and can get extremely stressful, but Denton always tried to find ways to make drumline fun. Like making fun vocals while marching, or matching the whole group during rehearsals.
Everyone has a favorite competition or experience during the marching band season.
Dentons’ favorite memory from marching band is going to the Festival of Champions(FOC) in Murray, every year, Denton said, “it’s fun and whimsical [and] you get to see familiar faces.”
Denton later said, “ [she had] multiple friends [that were] enrolled at Murray State.”
The marching band is known for its intricate and fun show designs. The show design for this year is based around The Kraken.
While it may seem ironic that the show’s title may be a play on words for the school’s name, it’s actually based on the plot of a massive sea creature and its journey across the ocean.
Denton stated that her favorite show design during her time in marching band was Queen’s Gambit(2021).
Denton later said that Queen’s Gambit was her favorite because, “[she liked the] black and white checkered print, [it had the] best musicality and [show] design.”
Denton was then asked about this year’s show and what she thought about it. Denton stated, “I like how whimsical the music is, but it can’t beat Queens Gambit.”
