Last February, Mike Magill (12) attended Murray State University E-Day. Magill won 2nd place in the engineering competition. MSU Eday is a competition held annually where teams from schools all across Kentucky come together to engineer and test their projects.
The teams begin by going off pictures whenever designing their builds. Mike would run into a problem with his Kayak.“Our kayak sank in the second race due to a piece of tape ripping off mid race, we found that other people used a SRAM wrap on a roller so they could repair their kayak in between races,” stated Magil.
The final product resulted in 20.125 (0.125 overweight), 7 feet long, and 30 inches wide. The kayak is then raced in a lap pool. The material changed to SRAM wrap, which is a thin, plastic, and stretchy material that helped Mike’s kayak with weight.
MSU was an opportunity for Magill to showcase problem-solving skills. “It shows our problem-solving skills and helps us get past multiple difficulties, like running out of materials,” stated Magil.
Mike and his team adapted to the changes that the teams were making. “We set the foundation for other students at MCHS because this was the first kayak ever made, ” said Magill.
