5 Most Anticipated Films of 2017

Luke Resser, Messenger Reporter

2017 has a lot of films to look forward to. With a whole new line of Marvel movies as well as countless unnecessary reboots, there is a wide array of films to see next year.

  1. Blade Runner 2049

When I heard there would be a sequel to the classic Blade Runner film, I was worried. There have been very few instances where a sequel made decades after the original film was any good. However, this film is directed by Denis Villeneuve, known for Arrival, Sicario, and Prisoners. Villeneuve is great so it will be interesting to see how he brings his cerebral style of filmmaking to this sci fi classic.

  1. War for the Planet of the Apes

The third film in the Planet of the Apes reboot promises to pick up at the cliffhanger from the last. This series surprised audiences by being one of the few occasions where rebooting a classic film actually produced some great films. Director Matt Reeves leads a cast including Woody Harrelson, Steve Zahn, and Andy Serkis as Caesar.

  1. Dunkirk

For his new film, Christopher Nolan tries something he’s never done before, a war film. Set in World War 2, this film tells the story of a group of stranded soldiers traveling through France in hopes of a rescue. Dunkirk has a varied cast including Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy, both regulars to Nolan films, Mark Rylance, who appeared in the WW2 film Bridge of Spies and most surprisingly, Harry Styles. While the casting of a member of One Direction is weird, Nolan’s casts always surprise me.

  1. Star Wars: Episode VIII

Pretty much any Star Wars film that comes out will be highly anticipated. This film however seems to have more potential to me. The director, Rian Johnson, directed Looper from 2012, so it will be interesting to see what he does to the eighth Star Wars film.

  1. Spider-Man: Homecoming

The solo film for the brand new Spider-Man is looking to be great. What we’ve seen from Tom Holland in Civil War looks like he’s shaping up to be the best Spider-Man we’ve ever had. With Michael Keaton as a villain, this is definitely the film that I’m most excited for in 2017.
