Paducah’s Columbia Theatre opened in 1927 and closed in 1987. In 2003, the building was donated to the city. And after 3 decades, the renovation of the theatre has begun. A lot of work needs to take place before the process is complete. The whole process is estimated to cost around 7 million dollars, depending on factors such as the decision to use either the original seating of the theatre, or getting new seats. While that may seem like a lot, the spirit behind the restoration will definitely be able to raise the money in a few years. The plan is to turn the theatre into a stage performance venue as well as a three screen theatre. The distinct style of the interior design, inspired by Greek and Byzantine architecture, will be preserved, but the lead paint has to be removed in order to keep the facility safe. Asbestos will also have to be removed. Once complete, the Columbia Theatre will run in partnership with Maiden Alley Cinema to offer independent and foreign films as well as documentaries.
