Taking Steps to Happiness: Being Unbothered

Taking Steps to Happiness: Being Unbothered

Everyone has their own way of finding happiness. It’s hard to help someone find what their meaning of “happiness” is, because it’s different for everyone. I’ve spoken with people from all different walks of life, and tried to form some kind of advice to give to anyone who’s on their search for happiness. The first step to being happy, is being unbothered.

What is “being unbothered?” Basically, it’s just doing what YOU want, and what makes YOU happy, and not letting other people’s opinions get in the way of your joy. I know, easier said than done, but it can be done. As far as opinions on what you enjoy, no one’s opinion matters more than yours. People can dog on you all day about something that makes you happy, but if you ignore them, it’s still making you happy, isn’t it? As long as what you’re doing doesn’t harm others, another person’s opinion about your form of happiness shouldn’t matter. Because no one knows what makes you the happiest but you.

An easy way to be unbothered is to initially surround yourself with people who have the same ideals as you. Find what you’re passionate about, what makes you the happiest, and find friends who have the same passions. This may make your opinion on your passions more biased, but without someone telling you that you shouldn’t do what makes you happy, it’s a lot easier to not let people bother you with their opinions. Take me as an example, I’m a “theatre kid” and I surround myself with people who love theatre. Of course, this goes without saying, people will pick on me for being so in love with the fine arts. But with the majority of the people I talk to on a daily basis loving theatre as much as I do,  the negative opinions about what I love are drowned out by the positive.

I hope this helps at least a little bit to anyone who’s trying to discover themselves and their happiness. As far as I’m concerned, being unbothered is a huge part of being happy. Without a sense of confidence, your happiness will never be found. Always believe in yourself and keep doing what makes you happy, no matter what anyone says.
