2018 National Championship

The national championship between the Georgia Bulldogs and the Alabama Crimson Tide was one for the books. Going into the game Alabama coach Nick Saban was eyeing Paul “Bear” Bryant’s 6 national championship wins a pretty remarkable feat in this day and age. Georgia’s coach Kirby Smart looked to be the first prior Saban assistant coach to beat him.

This game was predicted to be a low scoring defensive affair. In the first half there was only one touchdown scored and two field goals (both for the dogs) . Alabama wasn’t able to get anything going on offense with their true sophomore quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Following a sluggish first half, Alabama Coach Nick Saban gambled on a true freshman quarterback, and it paid off with a national title. Tua came in with just 53 pass attempts all year and hadn’t played a meaningful snap all season.  The early results were not much better for Alabama, however, as the Tide went three-and-out in its first drive with Tua in the game. However in the remaining time he came to play completing 14 passes for 166 yards and 3 touchdowns. Tua hit another freshman, Devonta Smith, for a 41-yard touchdown in the first overtime to give the Crimson Tide a 26-23 triumph over Georgia in the College Football Playoff championship game.

At the end of this game, being a Georgia fan, I am a bit sad but I’m also excited for the future. Sure the refs might have caused us the game *cough cough Tyler Simmons was onside* but we have a lot of young pieces and a great recruiting class coming in. So congratulations to Alabama but there is a new king of college football who resides in Athens.
