Starting the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas time is now upon us. Families have already started watching Christmas movies, making hot chocolate, putting up lights, and listening to Christmas music. Some people may think it’s too early, but nothing is ever too early for the Christmas spirit, except Christmas music. Music is the one thing that ties things together and makes everything more enjoyable. However, one song that isn’t enjoyable is, “All I Want for Christmas is You,” by Mariah Carey. This song is possibly the worst Christmas song ever. It was released in 1994, making it twenty-nine years old, and Carey’s top hit has been on the #1 charts every Christmas since it was released, making it a “classic”.

After twenty-nine years, you’d think there’d be a new song that people would listen to during the holidays. There are many different classics that are better than “All I Want for Christmas is You”; These include “Blue Christmas,” “Noel,” “Hallelujah,” “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,” “Little Drummer Boy,” and many more. One thing about Carey’s song is, it’s annoying. The same beat happens throughout the song with hardly any change of lyrics. Some may say, that’s how most songs are made, however, there’s something about Carey’s song that doesn’t hit the same.

Most people would say that “All I Want for Christmas is You,” is a classic and will always be a favorite Christmas song. However, according to some students at McCracken, they are “sick and tired of hearing ‘All I Want for Christmas is You.’” and want to “hear something new.” Why can’t there be a new classic? It‘s time for a change in Christmas songs.
