The Mane Sports

A lot has been going on for sports at MCHS this month. Basketball season is

coming to an end, CoEd went to nationals, and baseball/ softball are starting up.

The basketball teams are preparing for districts and postseason as their season comes to a close.

The Men’s basketball team has had a good season going 22-2 only losing to Marshal county at Marshal and Bowling Green at home. They boys have one game left tonight against Murray. Murray is 11-6. Murray has lost to University Heights, Clarksville Academy, Marshal, Calloway, Ballard (Louisville), and St. Xavier.

The Women’s basketball team has had a great season. The Lady Mustangs have a 27-2 record only losing to Holy Cross and Ryle. The girls have one more regular season game tonight against Murray. Murrays’ girls team has gone 5-12 losing to Trigg county, Massac County, Paducah Tilghman, Marshal County, Muhlenberg County, Todd County Central, Graves County, Christian Fellowship, and Mayfield. The girls are hosting the district tournament and will play CCA their first district game.

The softball and baseball teams are about to begin their season. Both teams did very well last season. The baseball team went 35-7. The baseball team lost to Westview, Rossview, Mt. Juliet, Henderson County, Clarksville, and St. Xavier twice. The boys did not get super far into the playoffs last year but they are expected to do much better this season.  Baseball’s first scrimmage is in Dyer County, Tennessee on March 11th, 2023.

The softball team is expected to do a great job this season and has a great chance at winning state. Last season the girls went 35-3. They only lost to three teams. They lost to South Warren, Henderson County, and Lexington Catholic. The girls got far last season losing in the semi finals to Lexington Catholic in the postseason. The varsity lost a couple of solid swinging bats this year, but have lots of girls that are trying to fill their shoes. Their defense is always stellar and is expected to stay that way this season.  The girls are practicing six days a week to prepare for this season. They will face lots of tough competition, but are expected to do very well against their competition.  The girls play two scrimmages before their actual season starts.

Their first scrimmage is against Dyersburg on March 4th. Their second scrimmage is at Mike Miller Park on March 11th. Some of the girls have a lot to say about how they are feeling for the scrimmage on Saturday. Annie White, a senior at Mccracken County High School  that is going to WKU, says that “ I feel very confident about the scrimmage this weekend and I’m really excited to start playing with everybody! I think we will do really well!”  Another girl on the varsity team said “ I think this Saturday will be interesting. I believe we will do very well, but I’m interested in seeing where everyone plays.” I talked Ally Hutchins, a senior at Mccracken and a UK commit, and she said “ I’m really excited for the scrimmage on Saturday, I’m also really excited to see the depth of our lineup and just how talented we are. Unfortunately, I won’t be there, but I cannot wait to see what all of the girls can do and how we perform together because I have really high expectations for the season and there is no reason why we should not make a deep run at state again this year.”

Coed cheer has had a very good season and everyone loves to watch them perform at the football games. Coed goes to lots of competitions every year and a football game is like their practice. Coed goes with the football team to all of their games. The Coed team also splits time with all girl cheer when it comes to cheering at basketball games.  The Coed practices quite vigorously. They practice three days a week all the way from May until Nationals.

Coed went to state on Saturday January 21st, 2023. Coed won state which is not surprising considering they have been dominating the cheer world since the high school opened in 2013. Coed won their right to UCA Nationals because they won state.

Nationals for coed are held in Orlando, Florida every year. It is two days of showing the judges what you have. Before the Coed team leaves, they have a pep rally. During the pep rally they show us their routine for nationals. After their pep rally they leave for nationals. They drive to Nashville on a bus and then fly to Orlando. From there they drive to their final destination, Disney World.

Nationals are always held at Disney World. The Coed team advanced on Saturday to the semi finals. Semi finals are also on Saturday. The Coed did very well in semi finals. They did so well that they advanced to finals. Finals were on Sunday. Coed had a really great routine, so well in fact that they won nationals. I asked Cate Hurley how she felt about winning nationals and she had a lot of different feelings. She said “ It was mainly just excitement in the moment, but a lot of other emotions were mixed in.” She also said “ It is very hard to describe unless you are there to experience it.” Coed has always done well at nationals, but really excelled this year.
