For MCHS teacher Mike Wentworth, law enforcement is a family business. “It’s kind of a family thing. My father was a cop, my brother was a cop, I was a cop, and now my son has decided to follow in my footsteps.”
Ultimately, all three generations of Wentworth’s family were drawn to careers with the Paducah Police Department, where he worked for just over 12 years before retiring.
In addition to teaching, Mr. Wentworth is the sponsor for the Law and Public Safety Club. His club gives students an opportunity to explore what a career in law enforcement might look like.
Crime scene investigation is one of the many subjects discussed in Wentworth’s class. “We also go over what to do at a crime scene, crime scene investigators, what their duties are, and how they identify, collect, and preserve evidence.”
Students are able to utilize VR to simulate real-life police encounters. Club secretary Paige Strong says, “I thought it was a good way to subject the students to real-life scenarios so that they could gain a better understanding of police interactions with suspects and witnesses.”
Students can sign up for the club during club rush, and people can also join a club meeting, which happens every Wednesday.
