Ever since McCracken County High School was built, three large horse statues have stood proudly in front of the building, representing the three school districts that merged to form MCHS: Reidland, Lone Oak, and Heath. That is, until 2024. Even to this day, only two horses remain out front, the one representing Heath having mysteriously vanished, and not without notice. Rumors have sparked over time speculating what possibly could have happened, but the true story behind this case remains unsolved.
“It came to life and galloped away. That’s the only logical explanation.” proposed Katelyn Fields, MCHS Senior and former Heath student. She refused to elaborate. Some students, on the other hand, speculate that Fields had something to do with it. “Obviously, she stole it. But why?” Stated senior Briley Baird, “She was pretty quick to make up an excuse, and I’ve heard a rumor that she was seen in the parking lot after school smuggling a suspiciously large tarp-covered object into her car.” Fields remains widely suspected as gossip spreads school-wide. Less realistic theories on this case suspect something of a weather damage disaster. The truth remains a mystery.
What does this mean for MCHS? Is this missing mare a sign of something bigger? It appears to be causing a school-wide divide as students argue, accuse, and slowly lose hope. “She didn’t just steal a horse, she stole our school spirit.” stated Baird, referring to Fields. Regardless of who may really be behind this theft, this message remains true. A piece of our school spirit is missing, an emblem of unity, and we must march on together in hopes of solving this mystery and doing whatever we can to restore it.
